3 Arabic brands that outdo their foreign competition

Given the choice, would you rather have a Coca Cola with your lunch or a Mandarin Cola? Please don’t answer that. It’s no secret that in the Arab world we prefer foreign products to their Middle Eastern counterparts.

Think of the fast food chains in which you dine or the deodorant brand you can’t live without. How many of them belong to companies from our region?

But there are certain exceptions that have managed to beat out the foreign competition and they’re worth noting.

California Garden

california garden, canned, food, beans, middle east

For some reason, the California Garden canned food variety that belongs to Gulf Food Industries managed to top all competing brands from the Western world. And there are many great ones. There’s nothing particularly wonderful about its branding; its products simply taste good. This makes one wonder, is branding always the most important element about a product?

Al Hada

hada, water, middle east, saudi, arabia

Aquafina is great water. Nestle is pretty high up there. They’re fine picks, no doubt. But when Hada is an option it definitely ousts all else. Once again the taste does wonders for its popularity. But there’s also something about its appearance that feels closer to home. It’s so simple and pure, just as water should be, which seems to be the winning factor for Hada.

Emirates

emirates, logo, airlines, uae

The UAE has many luxurious advantages, but the popularity of Emirates airlines goes beyond that. With Dubai being a hub for diverse nationalities and Emirates being the first airline in the region to respond, it quickly became the emblem of a great brand not just in the region but globally. Its endless destinations and world-standard services (ok, and the luxury doesn’t hurt) make it much more popular than its foreign competitors.

What other Middle Eastern brands would your choose over the foreign version?

I agree with the article, but to me there's a certain "patriotic" element to my choices of local product. A while ago, a Lebanese Industry minister (now assassinated) launched a local campaign to Lebanese with a slogan : " If you love Lebanon, love its industry".
That campaign had a huge success, and I for one was impressed and taken by it. Even when I lived in Dubai, I used to make it a point to purchase Lebanese products as my mini-tiny effort to support my country's economy (call me cynical). Now that I am in Lebanon, I continued that trend until I started to see thngs more clearly : There's a handful few that do not adhere to ISO standards (Like Western brands), hence disrupt the TRUST of the good brands. Most Arab governments (specially Levant countries) are not doing anything about it.

As a "consumer" I decided to fight back, also a tiny-mini effort in protest. But my protest is constructive, not hateful. You can see an example here : http://on.fb.me/egxjKy

Arab brands have to build trust before they can build popularity. I admire Emirates Airlines from product developement to Marketing campaigns.

I agree with Talal on Dr. Cafe in Saudi, and the article in general. The few notes that I have is that I never new that Calefornia Gardens is local! but the major factor for it and Hada is that both are food comodity products, if they taste good and without quality or scandals, the price, availability and distribution channels are the decisive factors in getting your brand to succeed.

As for Emirates, I think the key factor in their success is the abundance of destinations and coverage as well as competitive pricing (though not always) is the key factor, with regards to luxury I never felt that they're more luxirious than other international airlines, they provide a decent standard.

To be honest this article is inspiring so many thoughts about brand loyalty, the actual perception of brands,... I'll try to come back to those in a while!
